Test the Material

Confirm that your rhinestones are labeled hotfix. Hotfix adhesive works best on clean, dry, absorbent and heat-tolerant materials.

  • Prewash without fabric softener when appropriate.
  • Check for waterproofing or stain-resistant finishes.
  • Test delicate, coated, textured or stretch fabrics.
  • Seams and zippers can create uneven pressure.
  • Use glue-on stones for glass, plastic or metal.
Remember: A successful bond requires the correct combination of heat, pressure and time. Always follow the instructions for the rhinestone brand you are using.

Heat the Rhinestone

  1. Place stones crystal side up on a heat-safe surface.
  2. Pick up one stone with the heated concave tip.
  3. Watch the exposed adhesive on the back.
  4. Apply the stone when small bubbles begin to form.

Place the Rhinestone

  1. Mark the design with small chalk dots.
  2. Place the heated stone directly on its mark.
  3. Do not slide it after it touches the material.
  4. Use fine tweezers in the tip's side slots if the stone does not release.
  5. Press carefully, then allow it to cool.

DIY Rhinestone Transfers

Keep the iron stationary and apply firm pressure.

Use a Household Iron

  • Turn off steam and empty the water.
  • Use a firm, heat-safe work surface.
  • Protect the fabric and transfer.
  • Press firmly without moving the iron back and forth.
  • Follow the rhinestone manufacturer's settings.

Use a Craft or Flat Heat Press

A heat press provides more consistent heat and pressure for complete transfers.

  • Keep the application area flat on the lower platen.
  • Use a pressing pillow around seams or zippers.
  • Follow the recommended heat, pressure and time.
  • Cool, peel and inspect as directed.

  1. Test the fabric and review the application settings.
  2. Place the stones against the fabric with clear tape on top.

  • Change only one setting at a time during testing.

What is the difference between hotfix and non-hotfix rhinestones?

Hotfix stones contain heat-activated adhesive. Non-hotfix flat backs require separate glue or another setting method.

Can I use a household iron?

Yes, for some applications. Turn off steam, use firm stationary pressure, follow the rhinestone instructions and test first.

Is an applicator or heat press better?

What temperature and time should I use?
