One of the first steps in embellishing with crystals is choosing how to attach them to your garment, accessory, or art project. There are four main methods:
- Adhesives for non-hotfix flatbacks
- Hotfix application for hotfix flatbacks
- Sewing for sew-on crystals
- Metal settings for non-hotfix flatbacks or fancy stones
Flatback rhinestones are versatile enough for all four methods. Other shapes, such as pointed-back rhinestones, may be limited to adhesives or specialty-fit metal settings. In most cases, and especially for beginners, the adhesive method is the easiest place to start.
How do I glue flatback rhinestones?
Both beginners and experienced crystallers use the adhesive method. It is portable, precise, and requires little investment in equipment. Many adhesives are formulated specifically for crystal and crystal trimmings.
Our best-selling and most recommended glues for attaching non-hotfix flatback crystals to fabric are E6000, Beacon Gem-Tac, and Eclectic Fabri-Fuse.
We do not recommend:
- Isocyanate glues, such as instant adhesives and super glue
- Any glue containing acetone
- Hot glue
Use glue for the intended purpose and materials listed on the label. Test your glue, materials, and method on a scrap or in an inconspicuous area before starting each project. Make sure the adhesive secures all edges of the stone so it will not catch and peel, follow the manufacturer's instructions, and wash the finished project with care.

How do I apply hotfix rhinestones?
Hotfix is also called iron-on. Hotfix flatback crystals are manufactured with a heat-activated fabric glue already on the back of the stone. When correctly applied, hotfix glue is one of the strongest fabric adhesives available.
The heating elements most commonly used are:
- A heat press, for large-scale manufacturing
- A household iron, using a faceplate without steam holes
- A handheld precision wand, called a hotfix tool

How do I sew on crystals?
Sew-on crystals have holes through or behind the stone so a needle and thread can pass through. Crystal pendants and beads can be sewn onto fabric as trim, along with crystal notions such as buttons, zippers, and buckles, and rhinestones by the yard such as banding and cup chain.
Adaptations also exist. Fancy stone metal settings let a large stone without holes be secured in a setting and then sewn on. Appliques are a quick way to add sparkle without placing individual stones.

What about metal settings?
Metal settings hold a non-hotfix flatback or fancy stone in a metal frame, which is then attached to fabric with prongs, stitching, or rivets. Settings give a finished, jewelry-like look and hold up well on garments that see heavy wear.
