Rhinestones are measured in several different ways depending on the type of stone. Round flatback rhinestones are most commonly identified by Stone Size (SS), while many shaped stones, sew-on stones, beads, pendants, and other crystal components are measured in millimeters (mm). You may also see Pearl Plate (PP) sizing on some very small round stones.
With SS sizing, the number increases as the rhinestone gets larger. For example, a 12ss rhinestone is smaller than a 20ss rhinestone. SS sizes correspond to an approximate millimeter range rather than one exact universal diameter, so measurements can vary slightly by rhinestone brand and cut.
Think beyond round rhinestones when choosing size. Size can also mean tiny crystal shapes or micro crystals for intricate detail, or large sew-on jewels for dramatic focal points.

Match the 30ss Rhinestone to a Pencil Eraser
A 30ss rhinestone measures approximately 6.3mm, about the diameter of a standard pencil eraser.
