What makes MAXIMA hotfix rhinestones different?

MAXIMA is Preciosa's premium round crystal flatback, and the hotfix version adds a heat-activated adhesive layer for textile application. The crystals are made in the Czech Republic and use DuraFoiling, a copper-free underside system with a genuine silver reflective layer.

How does hotfix adhesive work?

Heat melts the adhesive layer on the back of the rhinestone so it can penetrate a suitable base material, then the adhesive becomes solid again as it cools. A successful bond depends on more than temperature alone.

Preciosa identifies four important variables: temperature, pressure, application time, and whether heat reaches the rhinestone from the front or back. Fabric absorption and heat resistance also matter.

• Test the fabric before decorating the finished piece.
• Use a clean surface free from grease or residue.
• Check that the fabric can tolerate the required heat and pressure.
• Use even pressure across the application area.
• Give the adhesive 24 hours to cure before washing or testing the bond.

How do you apply MAXIMA hotfix rhinestones with a heat press?

A heat press is our preferred method when you need controlled, repeatable heat and pressure across a larger application. Preciosa's technical guidance shows that the correct application time changes with the fabric, rhinestone size, temperature, equipment, and direction of heat.

For example, Preciosa's application table for Chaton Rose MAXIMA hotfix uses cotton at 160°C (320°F) as one reference point, but the manual makes clear that this is not a universal setting for every project.

1. Test your fabric and application settings on a sample.
2. Preheat the heat press and check that heat is distributed evenly.
3. Place the rhinestones or hotfix transfer in position.
4. Use a compensation pad when needed to create an even application surface.
5. Apply the tested combination of heat, pressure, and time.
6. Allow the adhesive to cool for about 5 minutes.
7. Handle the decorated material carefully while the adhesive cures.
8. Wait 24 hours before washing or testing the final bond.

Can you use an iron or hotfix applicator instead?

Yes, but the best tool depends on the size and type of project. A household iron can work for smaller applications, while a hotfix applicator is useful when you want to place individual rhinestones precisely.

The challenge with a household iron is consistency. Temperature and pressure are harder to control across the application area than with a heat press. Always turn off steam, protect the fabric, and test before working on the finished piece.

When is hotfix not the better choice?

Choose non-hotfix rhinestones when your material cannot safely accept the heat and pressure hotfix application requires, or when its surface prevents the adhesive from bonding properly.

This is one of those cases where the "best" rhinestone is the one that works with your project. Hotfix is convenient, but it is not right for every fabric or surface. Preciosa recommends testing the material's heat resistance and absorption before application.

How does MAXIMA compare with Swarovski?

Both MAXIMA and Swarovski^® sit in RU's top crystal quality tier, but they use different facet designs and are separate crystal brands. MAXIMA is our stocked hero line, while Swarovski is stocked in a more limited assortment with larger orders moving to special order.

No. Hotfix rhinestones already have heat-activated adhesive on the back. Heat activates that adhesive so it can bond to a suitable material.
